Awesome and Free Online RPG: Kingdom of Loathing

Kingdom of Loathing

Kingdom of Loathing, or KoL, is a free RPG that is currently in open beta, and is a lot of fun. You can play it your browser too, so you don't have to download anything. You get a certain amount of turns each day, so use them wisely.

Rock Band Featuring Full Nirvana Album

I thought it was a pretty good idea when it was announced that Rock Band would be allowing their players to download full length albums to play with the game, but I was all that excited about it at first, since the first album announced was The Who's "Who's Next." The latest announcement has me much more excited though. Nirvana's "Nevermind" has been confirmed to be a full album download, and I think that is awesome. Nirvana has always been one of my favorite bands, and I'm sure the rest of my friends will be excited to play it as well, when I buy it.

New Demo Available on PSN

Did you check the Playstation Store lately? If you did, then you probably still don't know of any new demo's other than Heavenly Sword. But if you have a Japan account, you would have. There is new medieval real time strategy demo available on the Japanese PSN called Bladestorm. This game takes place in the Hundred Years War in Europe. If you don't already have a Japanese account, create one and get the demo. The full version of the game is scheduled for release in North America this November.

Headdy arrives in North Town and finds that Dark Demon, the evil puppet king, is gathering puppets in town and turning them into his own evil minions. Xbox 360 Price Drop Rumor Coming True

It looks like the rumor of the Xbox 360 price drop is looking more and more like it's true as the days go by. Cheapy D from CheapAssGamer has posted a Walmart ad showing a $50 price cut as well as a Toys 'R Us ad showing the price cut scheduled for August 12. These are only rumors and nothing is official yet, but I think everyone knows that a price drop is inevitable.

Rockstar Games Franchise a PS3 Exclusive

The Director of 3rd party relations at SCEA has announced on the Playstation Blog, that Sony has agreed to the exclusive rights to the next hot property coming out of Rockstar Studios. The franchise is something that is completely new and any other information about it will not be disclosed at this time. I'm excited to hear what it is and I hope it is violent. Not some Rockstar Table Tennis type of thing.

Jaffe Announces Eat, Sleep, and Play

David Jaffe, known widely for Twisted Metal and God of War, has recently hinted of a major announcement on Friday and in that announcement, he has stated that he will be going indie. He will be leaving Sony Computer Entertainment and will be starting his own development studio, which will be named "Eat, Sleep, and Play" with the founder and former Incognito coworker, Scott Campbell. Eat, Sleep, and Play has signed an agreement with SCE to develop several Playstation titles within the next several years, the first of which is scheduled for release in 2008.

Chains of Olympus Video

If are a God of War fan, you should be excited to see some video of the upcoming game for the PSP. This video comes from the recent E3 show. It's pretty long and will give you a really good idea of what to expect of the game. Have a little peek, why don't ya?

  • Suck My Kiss - Redo Hot Chili Peppers (original recording)
  • Through the Fire and Flames - Dragonforce (original recording)

If you've been living under a rock, you probably don't know that you can now download the demo for Heavenly Sword. If you didn't run straight to your PS3 to play the demo, you can finish reading what else the update brings. Too Much Content on XBL

It's good to have tons of content, but I'm just plain tired of writing about it. There are some more demos and content available on the Xbox. First of all, the in game content for Project Sylpheed containing 6 new missions and weapons is back online after going down soon after being posted yesterday. The demos that are available for download are Dynasty Warriors: Gundam, which nobody really seems to like anyway, and MotoGP' 07, which should appeal to all of you superbike racing fans. The graphics look awesome too.

High Hopes: Lair is Finished

Lair has been praised and talked about for a very long time now, and the announcement has finally been made the game is finished and is ready for release next month on August 14th. Let's see if this game really meets the extremely high expectations that have been set.

Gran Turismo 5 Prologue Details

Some new information has been announced for the upcoming GT game on Playstation 3. The game will include a Playstation Home icon on the top menu screen, chat features, about 40 cars and 4 courses, and different game control modes, depending on how you want the car to react. Prologue will also not include cars and course downloadables and will fall somewhere between the GT and Arcade mode. It is scheduled for release in October in Japan, but no release date has been set for the U.S.

Comic-Con Coming to Xbox Live

Xbox 360 Price Drop

There is a rumor going around that the Xbox 360 will drop in price by $50 in August. There is no evidence to confirm this anywhere though. I'm sure many people would like to hear it confirmed.

Metal Gear Solid Gameplay!

Finally! We get to see some actual gameplay from Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. The game looks awesome. The video shows off some really cool stuff like Snake using camouflage, stealing items from enemies, and new skills and use of weaponry.

Cool Demos Hit XBL

Even more cool content on Xbox Live and this time in the form of demos. Download NASCAR 08, which is a must have for all of you racing nuts, especially considering that it is the first NASCAR game for the Xbox 360. You can also play as some of your old NFL favorites in the demo for All Pro Football 2K8. From what I've seen of All Pro Football, that one looks pretty damn good.

Cartoon Network Launches MMO

Cartoon Network Universe: FusionFall will debut at Comic-Con 2007 in San Diego, which starts today. FusionFall is set in a Cartoon Network universe and the player controls a kid in the world who will team up with other players and Cartoon Network characters in order to protect it from an alien invasion. The game is Cartoon Networks first massively multi-player online game and is scheduled for a release in the summer of 2008. Check out the full press release here.

Metal Gear Closed Beta Test

There have been tons of beta tests going on lately and one of the most exciting announcements is the one for Metal Gear Solid 4. The sad part is that the beta is only in Japan right now. As of right now until August 6th, you can apply to be accepted, but there will only be 3,000 applicants that will get the chance to enjoy the beta. Hopefully the beta will spread to other parts of the world. Specifically my part of the world. If you can read Japanese, check out the Metal Gear Online Beta page.

Heavenly Sword Demo Hits PSN This Week

It has been confirmed that the demo for the really cool looking game, Heavenly Sword will be hitting North America on Thursday. That will be the first thing I do when I get home from work.

God of War: Betrayal Playable Online

The mobile game, GoW:Betrayal is a mobile only game, and the sad thing is that you can only play download it if your service is through Verizon. Now you have the ability to play it online though, but only for five minutes, since it is a demo. Check it out the Java game here. It's kinda fun, but feels a little too quiet.

PS3 Firmware Update Details

The 1.90 Firmware update contains many goodies. The update is already available in Japan and Europe gets it tomorrow, but of course, we will have to wait for our regular day of the week when we get ours. It's not complete but check the list below for an example of some of the things we will get.

Super Contra contains single player and two player co-op, and update graphics. You get to play with the old graphics as well, if that's your choice.

They have released the Synchronicity Pack, which includes five more maps for the popular game at a price of 550 Microsoft points. The lastest update brings some pretty good stuff. Quite a bit actually. You can download the PS1 game, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night for your PS3 or PSP for $9.99, which is cool. There are of course some movie trailers too, which consist of The Brothers Solomon, Resident Evil: Extinction, I Am Legend, The Big One, Underdog, and The Brave One.

Wii Table Tennis On It's Way

Remember the shocking game that Rockstar released on the Xbox 360. Yeah, Rockstar Games Presents Table Tennis. It was shocking but it wasn't shocking, get it? Ok, nevermind. Anyway, the game has been announced that it will be coming to the Nintendo Wii, which will utilize the Wii's motion sensing controller. You should see it sometime this Fall.

The ESRB: A Bunch of Punks

3D Realms looks to be the ESRB's next target. 3D Realms has been using old rating icons and has missing content descriptor on their website, so the ESRB has given them 10 days to make the changes, or "comply", or else they will face penalties. Jeez, the ESRB are a bunch of crybabies on a power trip.

Super Mario Galaxy Looks Awesome

Did you see Super Mario Galaxy during E3? If you missed it, here is some video of gameplay taken at the event. It looks great and I really can't wait to play it.

Echochrome on Your PC

Echochrome On the PC

If you were paying any attention to the E3 2007 coverage last week, you would have noticed how big of a deal everyone was making about the upcoming PSN game, Echochrome. As everyone rightfully should because this game is awesome. How would I know, you may ask? Well, did you read the title of this post? You can play Echochrome on your computer.

Tons of Transformers Xbox Live Content

There is some more content on XBL. There are actually four themes for Transformers: The Game. Home Beta: Finding New Recruits

Playstation Home

I've heard that Sony has given more people access to the Home Beta. Check the Playstation Store to see if you've been accepted.

Guitar Hero on Your Phone

Not actually, but damn near close enough. Gameloft is bringing a Guitar Hero clone to your mobile device. It actually looks just like Guitar Hero. They have licensed some pretty good songs too. The songs that will be available on this game will be Banquet, Rock You Like A Hurricane, Run to the Hills, Message in a Bottle, Smoke on the Water, Honest Mistake, Heroes and my favorite from the list, Heart-Shaped Box. Gameloft will be creating a career mode with a bunch of unlockables too, so this should actually turn out to be an exciting game.

July 17, 2007

Mario Party 8 Shelved in the UK

Nintendo has recalled the family friendly game, Mario Party 8 in the UK due to a not-so-family-friendly word included in the game. This is the second game within a month for being recalled for the same term, which is "spastic." The whole phrase is "Magikoopa magic! Turn the train spastic! Make this ticket tragic!" Apparently the term spastic is offensive in the UK. I guess it is a politically incorrect term for the mentally handicapped. I have never heard of it being used that way, but there you have it.

Virtual Console Releases

Some good releases this week. Check 'em out.

Mach Rider

Balloon Fight (NES, 500 Wii points) is a fun game in which you take control of a character who is attached to balloons. Basically, you have to try to pop your opponents balloons they pop yours. This game is actually a lot of fun.

Mach Rider

Paper Mario (Nintendo 64, 1000 Wii points) is a different kind of RPG, in which you take control of Mario, of course. You also get to control many other familiar characters throughout the game. I own this game (N64 version), but have not actually played it yet, but my brother tells me that it has way too much story and not enough gameplay.

Mach Rider

Silent Debuggers (TurboGrafx-16, 600 Wii points) is a real time first person shooter in which you control a character making his way through a space station filled with monsters. You have 100 minutes to get in, kill all of the monsters in each area, and get to lowest level of the space station in order to deactivate the detonator that has been placed there.

Guitar Hero 3 on Attack of the Show

Guitar Hero 3 was shown on Attack of the Show last night, and it looks good. It looks pretty hard to me actually. I have to admit that I love the game, but I'm not all that great at it. Check out the video to see why I say it looks hard.

You'll be able to pick up the kit for $29.99.

Metal Gear Might Not Be a PS3 Exclusive

That title is sure to leave your draw dropped if you are a Playstation 3 owner. You heard right though. Kazumi Kitaue, head of Konami North America and European operation, has made a startling announcement in which he states that Metal Gear Solid 4 may move to other consoles. They may do this in order to recoup costs incurred in development of the game. They have not yet confirmed though, that the game will not be exclusive to the PS3, but it sure seems to be headed in that direction.

New Killzone Screenshot

USA Today has released the first screenshot of the upcoming Killzone game. Doesn't say much, but looks good.

Hot Shots Tennis Demo Shipped

Sony has shipped their demo for the upcoming game in the Hot Shots series, which is tennis. Hot Shots Tennis is actually a pretty good game, but it still doesn't beat Hot Shots Golf. I think it should contain some types of minigames or something, but it doesn't. It's still good though. Check out the Hot Shots Tennis video. I only recorded the intro because the demo doesn't offer much and thought this showed a lot more of what you can look forward to.

Dead or Alive Online Trailer

Wanna see some of the upcoming Dead or Alive Online game? Looks fun!! Heres the trailer.

I know that Playstation 3 owners were looking forward to seeing some Katamari action on their beloved system, but it looks like it just isn't going to happen. It looks like the the PS3 version of Beautiful Katamari has been cancelled. There isn't a reason for the cancellation yet. The game will still see a release in the Fall of this year on the Xbox 360.

If you thought the Playstation 2 was as good as it could be, you were wrong. There is now a new model of the PS2 available that has lost 1/3 of the weight of the slimline PStwo, going from 900 grams to 600. The adapter has also gone from 350 grams to 250. The system is visually identical to the previous version, since Sony achieved this by reducing the parts.

Slash Playable In Guitar Hero 3

If you know anything at all about music, you should know who Slash is. Slash is mostly known for playing guitar in Guns N' Roses and Velvet Revolver, but if you ever watched MTVX when it was around, you might also remember Slash's Snakepit. Anyway, back to videogames. Slash did some motion capture for the upcoming Guitar Hero game and he will be an unlockable character. According to Metal Injection, you have to complete all of the songs and face him in a one on one duel before you can take control of this Metal Icon.

The Last Remnant "Debut" Trailer

It's funny because when I think of an RPG, I still think of games like Illusion of Gaia and Earthbound, but by the looks of this video, I'm extremely out of date. Check out the trailer for The Last Remnant from Square Enix.

Microsoft Rethinks 360 Warranty

If you own an Xbox 360, it's quite likely that you have gotten the Red Ring of Death and you may be on your second, or even third 360. Especially considering that there is somewhere around a 33% failure rate on the console. It looks like Microsoft is trying to do a little something about the problem by offering a three year warranty on all Xbox 360's. If you have previously paid for repair on your console, Microsoft will retroactively reimburse you as well. That's the gist of it, but if you want to read the full press release, here it is:

Microsoft Corp. today announced that it will expand its global Xbox 360(TM) warranty coverage. Any Xbox 360 customer who experiences a general hardware failure indicated by three flashing red lights will now be covered by a three year warranty from date of purchase. All other existing Xbox 360 warranty policies remain in place.

As a result of what Microsoft views as an unacceptable number of repairs to Xbox 360 consoles, the company conducted extensive investigations into potential sources of general hardware failures. Having identified a number of factors which can cause general hardware failures indicated by three red flashing lights on the console, Microsoft has made improvements to the console and is enhancing its Xbox 360 warranty policy for existing and new customers.

Microsoft stands behind its products and is taking responsibility to repair or replace any Xbox 360 console that experiences the "three flashing red lights" error message within three years from time of purchase free of charge, including shipping costs. Microsoft will take a $1.05 billion to $1.15 billion pre-tax charge to earnings for the quarter ended June 30, 2007 for anticipated costs under its current and enhanced Xbox 360 policies.

"The majority of Xbox 360 owners are having a great experience with their console and have from day one. But, this problem has caused frustration for some of our customers and for that, we sincerely apologize," said Robbie Bach, president of Microsoft's Entertainment & Devices Division. "We value our community tremendously and look at this as an investment in our customer base. We look forward to great things to come."

For any customer who has previously paid for repair expenses related to the three flashing lights error message on the Xbox 360 console, Microsoft will retroactively reimburse them.

$100 Price Break for Playstation 3

This hasn't been confirmed by Sony yet, but it seems that a someone from the huge retailer that is Circuit City has. In a Circuit City ad, the Playstation 3 is labeled as $499, mentioned as having a $100 price reduction. The price break will take place on July 12th. Sounds like this may be the breaking point for people who have been considering a purchase of the PS3, especially since you will also get 5 free Blu-ray movies as well. I'm still glad that I bought mine before though, because my system has the Emotion Engine and plays all PS1 and PS2 games and doesn't need firmware updates to do this. Even though the firmware updates cover most of the games anyway.

PSN Update

Nothing this week. Lame. Next week is rumored to bring lots and lots of goodies though.

EA Announces "Family Play"

Electronic Arts has decided that the Wii's controller just might be a little too complex for some people and has created a "Family Play" system. Upcoming games such as Madden NFL 08, FIFA 08, and NBA Live 08 will give players the option of using either Advance or Family play mode. Advanced gives you complete control over gameplay and Family mode allows you only to control key functions such as passing, shooting, throwing, and snapping. That actually sounds like a pretty good idea for someone who isn't a sport game junkie and just wants to get in there and play.

Umbrella Chronicles Will Have Co-op

It has been confirmed that the upcoming Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles game for the Nintendo Wii will have two player co-op mode. As of right now, selectable players are Jill and Chris from Resident Evil 1 and Rebecca and Billy from Resident Evil 0. I love two player co-op games. Can't wait for this one. No release date has been set yet though.

Head of production on the PS3 only game, Heavenly Sword has provided some really interesting, and exciting information about his upcoming game. He has been quoted as saying, "I can confirm that we are, of course, going to be releasing a demo for Heavenly Sword...and soon! This will be downloadable via the Playstation Network...so keep an eye out for this in the very near future...and i mean very near future!" I think all of us are hoping that we will see this next week, and it actually isn't very unlikely either.

Virtual Console Update

Super Mario Bros. 2

Super Mario Bros. 2 (NES, 500 points) is really a game that shouldn't need an introduction, because if you haven't played the hell out of this game, you should be hit on the head with a tack hammer. This was probably one of my favorite Super Mario games, because it was so completely different from all of the others in the series.

Dragon Spirit

Dragon Spirit (TurboGrafx-16, 600 points) is a side scrolling shooter in which you control Amur, who takes the form of a dragon to rescue Princess Alicia from the Evil Demon of Darkness, Zawell. This game is actually really awesome, but it is also extremely hard. I never beat this game, but I got to the last boss about a thousand times.

Ecco: The Tides of Time

Ecco: The Tides of Time (Sega Genesis, 800 points) is a sequel to the much beloved Ecco the Dolphin. You play as Ecco who must battle the Vortex Queen, who has followed Ecco back to Earth from the future. This is a side scrolling adventure that includes puzzles to move ahead. Honestly, I never knew why these games were so popular, because I could just never get into them. But to each his/her own.

Missile Commmand on Xbox Live

Are you old enough to remember Missile Command for the Atari? If you are, you should be happy to know that the game will be coming to Xbox Live Arcade. The game will be released in an "original version" as well as an "evolved" versions which will feature enhanced graphics, sounds and special effects. The game will be available this Wednesday for 400 Microsoft points.

Zelda: Phantom Hourglass Release Date Confirmed

Nintendo has finally announced an official date for the first Zelda game on the Nintendo DS. The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass will be launching on the handheld on October 1. The story of the game, as described in the press release, goes like this.

"Legendary hero Link and Tetra, the leader of a band of pirates, as they discover a ghost ship in dense fog. Link falls into the ocean when Tetra gets into trouble, and he wakes up alone on the shore of a mysterious island. Throughout the game, Link collects sand for his Phantom Hourglass, which allows him to explore deeper and deeper into a time-limited dungeon in his quest to find Tetra."

DOA Online Announced

Shanda Interactive Entertainment Limited has announced today that they have entered into an agreement with TECMO to operate the online version of Dead or Alive in China, Hong Kong, and Macao. The game will be developed by TECMO's online game development studio and Shanda will provide it's technology and experience in the online arena to assist in development. It is expected for release sometime before the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and should see a global release sometime after. They have also announced that the game isn't just a rehash of the console versions of the series, but that it will be a completely new game, featuring the characteristics of a PC online game. Sounds good to me. I have always loved the DOA franchise.

Acclaim Giving Players Physical Versions of Online Games

Do you like to play all of those online MMO games? If you do, then you know how frustrating it can be to download some of these games because the files are just so big sometimes. Well Acclaim has listened to the fans of their own MMO games and have decided to release their games on CD or DVD. They have signed a deal with SwiftCD.com to get this done. The games will still be free, but you will have to pay shipping and handling, which can be anywhere from $3.99 US to $5.99 US. If you want to play some of these games, go to Acclaims website.
