The Nintendo Wii (pronounced as “we”) is one of the 7th generation video game consoles. The Wii was previously known by the code name of Revolution and is follows the 6th generation Nintendo GameCube. As most all of Nintendo products, the Nintendo Wii is targeted to a different demographic is still able to compete on some levels with the other 7th generation video game consoles. The Nintendo Wii console comes with a wireless controller, or the Wii Remote, which can be used for detection of motion and rotation in three dimensions as well as a pointing device. Users of the Wii can also recieve messages and updates over the internet through WiiConnect24.

Release

Nintendo first revealed information about the console in the 2004 E3 press conference. It was unveiled at the 2005 E3. At the Tokyo Game Show in September 2005 Satoru Iwata revealed a prototype of the controller. Nintendo released information for Japan, North America, South America, Australia, Asia, and Europe, on September 14 and 15, 2006 that included dates, prices, and distribution info for the Wii. Nintendo revealed plans on June 7, 2006 to release 6 million consoles and 17 million games during the fiscal year ending March 31, 2007. The majority of the 2006 shipments were announced to be released to the Americas on September 14, 2006. The Wii was released in the US and Canada on November 19, 2006, December 2nd, 2006 in Japan, December 7 in Australia and New Zealand, and December 8 in Europe, Ireland, and the United Kingdom.

Nintendoís Wii console has outsold the PS3 by more than double. They have sold 476,000 units in November where the PS3 has sold only 197,000. The Playstation 3 was released on November 17, 2006 and the Wii was released two days later on November 19. Nintendo reported on November 8, 2006 that sales have reached 600,000 units within it’s first 8 days of being released in the Americas region. Also, in the electronics products category, the Nintendo’s Wii was the most searched-for item on the internet during the 2006 holiday season. This was three times more popular than the searches for the PlayStation 3.
